Full Tour Description

Did you know that the earliest evidence of Mayan chocolate was between 400 and 600 BC? Discover Mexico’s Chocolate Workshop highlights how important the “cacao” seed was to the Mayans – culturally, spiritually and, and even as currency.

Upon arrival to Discover Mexico Park, you’ll relax in air-conditioned comfort as you view our exclusive four-screen video collage. The culmination of two years travel and filming, this award- winning presentation brings one of the world’s oldest and richest cultures vividly to life. Vibrant images from all over the México will take you from the Riviera Maya through Oaxaca to Chihuahua.

Next you’ll peruse our Museum of Popular Arts, which showcases works of contemporary folk art created by renowned artisans from all over Mexico. Mexico’s regional art is as varied as its culture.   You’ll have an opportunity to view works from artists all over the country  including the famous “barro negro” pottery and the colorful iconic “alebrijes” from Oaxaca. Your tour guide, who will remain with you throughout your visit to the Park, is well-versed in all aspects of Mexican culture and history and will be happy to answer any questions.

Now it’s time to enter the cacao workshop. You can’t help but take a long deep breath in when you open the door- the smell is intoxicating! Your guides will teach you the traditional tools used to roast and mill cacao seeds into real chocolate. You will then have the opportunity to mill your own chocolate bars that were used to make a delicious traditional Mexican hot cocoa drink called “chocolhaa”, all by using traditional methods – including hand-cranked mills, mortars, and pestles.

Once you’ve created your very own chocolate bar, you’ll wrap and seal it just like they do in a factory. Of course, you’ll also have the opportunity to try chocolate samples, cocoa powder, and even our exclusive Chocolate Liquor created using the traditional process- these are available for purchase as well!

Note: Please alert your guide if you are allergic to nuts.

After the tour, you are invited to see the Paplanta Flyers show- a unique aerial performance honoring Mexico’s ancient “voladores”.
